Ben Franklin TechVentures® was the first stop for Jamie Link, Ph.D. of the U.S. Department of Energy during a March 22nd and 23rd visit to the Lehigh Valley and Greater Reading area. Dr. Link is a Senior Technical Advisor in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), and the Deputy Program Manager for the Industrial Technologies Program (ITP). The tour was arranged by Joe Cresko, Director of the Emerging Technologies Applications Center (ETAC) at Northampton Community College and an Engineering Sciences Fellow supporting EERE and ITP. The visit was an opportunity for Dr. Link to observe first-hand the impact of DOE funding in the region, as well as interact with organizations developing, deploying and utilizing clean energy technologies and energy conservation measures.

(front to back) Chad Paul, Dr. Jamie Link, Peter Roberts, Joe Cresko, Bob Thomson (Ben Franklin), and John Barkanic and Ben Franklin TechVentures, Bethlehem.

Cresko worked with Connie Faylor and Bob Thomson of the Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Northeastern Pennsylvania (BFTP/NEP) to schedule two days of tours in the region, including meetings with companies that have received technical and financial assistance through ETAC/BFTP projects. Dr. Link met with several BFTP/NEP clients that are receiving investments through its allocation from the Alternative Energy Development Program (AEDP). Pennsylvania’s AEDP was created in July 2008 to incent collaboration to save energy costs, reduce dependence on foreign fuels, expand clean energy production, and create energy-related jobs in the state.

Chad Paul, President and Chief Executive Officer of BFTP/NEP, conducted a tour of the award-winning Ben Franklin TechVentures, and highlighted several client companies located within the incubator/post-incubator facility. Ben Franklin received a $6 million construction grant toward the facility’s $18 million expansion, TechVentures2, from the U.S. Commerce Department last year. Ben Franklin TechVentures2 is slated for completion by the end of 2011.

On Tuesday, March 22nd, Dr. Link visited Lehigh University’s Center for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology to hear about research happening in the materials areas as well as a presentation on industrial energy efficiency projects performed by Lehigh’s Industrial Assessment Center (IAC), where students get real-world experience helping manufacturers identify energy savings opportunities. The IAC is funded by DOE, and this past year Lehigh’s IAC was able to double the number of companies that were helped through additional Recovery Act funding.

Dr. Link also met with principals of CEWA Technologies, located in TechVentures and working with Lehigh University, which designs and manufactures point concentrator solar dishes. The solar dishes provide thermal energy at prices that are less than existing concentrating solar technologies, and are anticipated to be competitive with fossil fuels without relying on government subsidies. Link visited Whitehall-based Dynalene, Inc., which is developing two new heat-transfer fluids, one for concentrated solar power plants that is stable at higher temperatures and the other for use in fuel cells.

(front to back) Peter Roberts, Dr. Jamie Link, John Barkanic (NCC ETAC), Joe Cresko, and Chady Zablit (United Corrstack-Evergreen Community Power) at United Corrstack-Evergreen Community Power, Reading

On Wednesday, March 23rd, Dr. Link met leaders of Reading-based Custom Processing Services, which is working with BFTP/NEP and ETAC to identify a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system for a co-generation plant. The plant will provide for Custom Processing Services’ extensive electricity needs plus meet their thermal demand by utilizing non-polluting waste products that are typically sent to landfills. Pete Roberts of ETAC has experience in these types of projects. Pete spent several years helping Reading-based United Corrstack Inc. (UCI) evaluate the potential of CHP to power its paper recycling mill. UCI is now receiving all of its steam and power from Evergreen Community Power – the newest company affiliate operating a state-of-the-art CHP facility fueled by biomass. Dr. Link toured both the paper mill and the co-generation plant.

Dr. Link also met with Carpenter Technology, a world-leader in the development, manufacture, and distribution of cast/wrought and powder metal stainless steels and specialty alloys.
She concluded her regional visit at East Penn Manufacturing, the largest manufacturing employer in Berks County, which is developing process optimization that supports the company’s new advanced battery products. East Penn is the recipient of $32.5 million in DOE funding to expand production capacities of advanced lead-acid batteries and its UltraBattery, which combines the advantages of a carbon-enhanced, valve-regulated lead-acid battery with the advantages of an asymmetric supercapacitor. These products are used in hybrid electric vehicles, uninterruptible power supplies, and renewable energy.

Diversified Information Technologies, Scranton, Scott Byers, Esq., President & CEO
Diversified Information Technologies provides automated information management solutions to clients in the insurance, financial services, healthcare, and government sectors to perfect their business processes and secure compliance. Diversified began as a records storage company 26 years ago as a lower-cost alternative to companies in New York City. In 1987, Diversified recognized an opportunity to prepare to meet changing market needs, and worked with Ben Franklin and Wilkes University to re-engineer its service offerings.

Diversified developed a communication center for electronic vaulting, a technologically sophisticated application that utilizes satellite transfer communications and Internet capabilities. Today, Diversified’s core competencies in data capture, processing, and preservation result in reduced cost, shorter cycle time, and risk mitigation for clients’ critical information management needs. Diversified now employs 375 Pennsylvanians, and credits 264 of those jobs to its work with Ben Franklin.

Manufacturing Achievement

The company that best exemplifies achievement in the manufacturing arena, showing a proven track record of success and an unbending commitment to achieving and maintaining excellence in manufacturing.

United Corrstack, LLC, Reading, David F. Stauffer, General Manager
At a time when recycling, renewable fuel, and energy independence are at the forefront of national consciousness, United Corrstack (UCI) is a model of green efforts. The company produces recycled corrugated fluting paper which is a component of cardboard boxes, and is in the process of developing its own power plant that burns biomass organic waste. UCI worked with Ben Franklin and Northampton Community College’s Electrotechnology Applications Center (ETAC), first to evaluate options to allow higher throughput at the facility, and later to assess boiler fuel alternatives for UCI.

Because of rising energy costs, UCI is creating its own cogeneration plant, generated by materials such as wood and agricultural waste, to provide steam and electricity. UCI currently employs 80, and through the energy plant has created 25 new positions. UCI’s work with Ben Franklin and ETAC helped the company to significantly improve its competitive position, and will increase employment and reduce landfill waste in the region.

Entrepreneurial Advocate

Individuals from the community who have contributed their leadership, time, and expertise to helping entrepreneurs and the Ben Franklin Technology Partners accomplish their goals. These people demonstrate a sincere and selfless desire to see the region thrive, and back up their commitment with appropriate action.

Yvette and William Palmer, Principals, CFO & Stuff, LLC, Emmaus
Yvette Palmer has worked with Ben Franklin clients for more than a decade, providing pro bono reviews and critiques to a number of business plans, and feedback to companies on the financial and operational aspects of starting and operating a business. Bill Palmer, Yvette’s husband and business partner, complements her expertise with deep operational and management experience as former president of two manufacturing enterprises. These diversified skill sets allow CFO & Stuff to understand clients from a multi-faceted perspective, providing companies with comprehensive and coordinated input.

CFO & Stuff has worked with Ben Franklin clients including Acurlite, American Holtzkraft, Blazing Technologies, Effort Foundry, Fragrance Manufacturing, the Halide Group, and Spectrum Diving, among others. The Palmers help early-stage clients with pro forma budgets, including pricing and costing assistance, provide cash management and operational budgeting assistance to manufacturers, and share expertise on financial management and analysis, and financing options with all clients.

Special Achievement

An individual whose strong vision, dedication and commitment to the program have helped to bring about a better business environment for Ben Franklin clients.

Ellen T. Horan, President and CEO, Greater Reading Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Ellen Horan has been a valued partner with Ben Franklin since 1995, to the tremendous benefit of the business community in Greater Reading. Years ago, Horan worked with Ben Franklin and the Berks Business-Education Coalition to develop a dislocated worker training program to address the local need for manufacturing workers. On an ongoing basis, she links Ben Franklin with prospective clients, and is a source of referrals for the Ben Franklin-led Medical Devices Consortium.

In 2005, Horan was named President of the combined Berks Chamber of Commerce and Manufacturers’ Association of Berks County because of her comprehensive understanding of and ability to advance both the manufacturing and business communities in the region. Horan was selected as a Fellow in the Ford Foundation Regional Sustainable Development Program in 2008, and was named the Girl Scouts of America Women of Distinction recipient in March 2009. In January of 2009 the Greater Reading Chamber that she leads was awarded the highest rating possible, five-star accreditation, by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

United Corrstack has been building a planned energy solution called Evergreen Community Power, an energy-efficient boiler and steam generator that is fueled from biomass materials like wood waste to provide steam and electricity to the manufacturing facility.

United Corrstack has been building a planned energy solution called Evergreen Community Power, an energy-efficient boiler and steam generator that is fueled from biomass materials like wood waste to provide steam and electricity to the manufacturing facility.

The award is presented annually to the company that best exemplifies achievement in the manufacturing arena. United Corrstack (UCI) won for its planned energy solution called Evergreen Community Power, an energy-efficient boiler and steam generator that is fueled from biomass materials like wood waste to provide steam and electricity to the manufacturing facility.

“When we started getting approvals for the boiler, we were nervous because we were planning to put this huge power plant in the middle of the city,” says David Stauffer, vice president and general manager at UCI. “But our plans were very well-received. This award is a nice recognition of our efforts. Ben Franklin Technology Partners is one of those groups that everyone has a positive image of, so when you get recognition from someone like that, it means a lot more.”

Evergreen Community Power, a $135 million project, is the result of collaboration between UCI, BFTP and the Electrotechnology Applications Center (ETAC) at Northampton Community College. UCI worked with BFTP and ETAC to evaluate options to allow higher output at their facility and then to assess boiler fuel alternatives.

“One of the biggest questions we had in developing Evergreen Community Power was what the fuel would be,” says Stauffer. “The research we conducted with BFTP and ETAC assured us that there was plenty of biomass fuel for us to combust.”

Improving the Air—and the Economy—in Reading

UCI’s Evergreen Community Power plant will benefit the Reading area and beyond for a number of reasons. First, the technology used for combustion of the biomass material is a unique process called a “circulating fluidized bed.” The energy produced through this process is highly efficient from both a thermal and emissions standpoint, Stauffer explains. “We are about twice as efficient as a typical coal-burning power generation unit would be,” he says.

Thanks to reduced emissions, the new plant will improve air quality. “For every megawatt of electricity we make, that electricity will be displacing a fossil fuel unit somewhere,” Stauffer says. “When we fire up our 25 megawatts, 25 megawatts of coal fire goes down, which helps clean up the air.”

The plant will benefit the city of Reading economically as well. In addition to the 80 jobs United Corrstack is preserving on-site, they are adding 25 jobs on the plant site, and 50 additional jobs for the people who provide and ship the fuel. “Plus, most of our spending will take place in Berks County, which will help stimulate local economic development,” Stauffer adds.

The Right Technical Resources

United Corrstack first partnered with BFTP in 2004; since then, UCI has worked together twice with BFTP and ETAC. The first project, in which BFTP invested $5,000, involved evaluating options for a more efficient way to dry paper. The second project successfully resulted in the study of boiler fuel alternatives for Evergreen Community Power. “Ben Franklin paid for half of the study ($7,500), and we paid for the other half,” Stauffer says.

Stauffer credits BFTP regional manager Connie Faylor as a critical partner in getting Evergreen Community Power off the ground by introducing United Corrstack to Northampton Community College’s ETAC.

“When Connie first approached us, she tried to find every possible connection, and thank goodness she was persistent,” Stauffer says. “We are a mature company, so sometimes it’s difficult to find the right technical resources. As you can see, we obviously benefited tremendously.”
