Hero’s Kafe, based in Ben Franklin TechVentures, had to be creative when COVID-19 forced it to temporarily close its breakfast and lunch business. The restaurant teamed with the Allentown Housing Authority to provide meals each weekday to residents — many of whom face higher exposure risk of the deadly disease due to age and infirmities. This could be an ideal match — cooked up out of a promise to keep working and making money. It’s still in its infancy, but on Monday, Torres, Martinez and their two employees prepared lunches delivered to residents who could not leave their homes.
“What I’m trying to do is a healthy lunch with some sweets, to make their day a little sweeter,” Torres said last week before she and Martinez embarked on cleaning the Gross Towers’ kitchen and arranging for vendor deliveries to their new, temporary location.
