As worldwide demand for batteries grows, East Penn Manufacturing Co. and EnerSys, two of the world’s largest battery makers and both headquartered in Berks County, are expanding research and development. The two companies are exploring lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries for a variety of applications including telecommunications, electric vehicles and back-up power to electric grids. East Penn operates the largest, lead-acid battery manufacturing facility in the world. The company operates in 85 locations and has 10,000 employees, of which 8,000 work in Lyon Station.
